Nature calls

Shaina and her family moved to Solana Beach right around the time that junebug opened.  She too, was one of our very first customers and would often ride her bike down Cedros with Tulsi (4 years) and Io (2 years, pronounced Ay-o) in-tow.  What I have loved about their visits is that they are exactly that - visits.  Not shopping extravaganzas or a deal-hunting missions - just visits to a local store.  They always take their time, and the girls play contentedly and peacefully together and apart.  In fact, the girls got so comfortable at junebug that on more than one occasion, *almost* potty-trained Io forgot she didn't have her diaper on! When nature calls...  Unfortunately Shaina didn't share any tips on potty training or the secrets to peaceful parenting, but she did give a glimpse into the meaning of her daughters' names, the key to hiking Torrey Pines with two kids under 5 and favorite shoe brands for running and jumping.

I know you have told me before, but can you remind me of the meaning of your daughters' names again?

"Yes. Tulsi, or Holy basil, is a medicinal herb that can be used to make tea which we like to drink. And Io is Jupiter's moon.  (It's also like binary code - and since my husband is a programmer, we liked that too.)  We like that their names are connected to the natural world."

I understand you have a big move to northern California coming up!  During your short time in Solana Beach, what have been some of your favorite local family friendly activities and what are you most looking forward to about your move?

"Around here, we like to go hiking at Torrey Pines.  We just got a State Parks pass so we can park at the top - which makes it MUCH more manageable with a 2 and a 4 year old!  We also love Moonlight beach, and the Botanic gardens.  We often go on Wednesdays or Thursdays when they have art activities in the Seeds of Wonder kids garden.  After having moved around a lot from Durham, North Carolina to Indiana to Solana Beach, in a couple weeks we'll be moving to the Santa Cruz mountains.  I'm most excited to be in the mountains, near the redwoods and to be somewhere where there's a slower pace of life - living in a city, you can get caught up in the momentum of things."

What are the girls into right now?

"Tulsi loves all art - drawing, coloring, collage - lately she has been making doll clothes out of felt!  She has also gotten interested in doing math workbooks, which I think is very cool.  It's more natural for me to get behind the art, but I'm also trying to show math in a positive light.  Io is into taking care of her babies and her animals, and pretty much doing whatever Tulsi is doing."

I know from your junebug purchases that Tulsi gravitates towards bright colors.  What else do the girls like to wear?

"When Tulsi has to wear pants, she will ONLY wear comfy leggings, like the ones from H & M.  Right now Io insists on wearing layers - no matter the temperature.  The other day she wore muli-colored striped tights over her leggings and a t-shirt over her dress.  And she always wants to wear her swim shirts and bottoms.  She's gotta be prepared at all times, you know..."

What brands or styles do you prefer as a mom?

"Shoes are a big deal for us.  I want my kids to have practical shoes, ones that they can run, jump and play in, and that are flexible and supportive.  I have found that Stride Rite and pediped have worked best for us so far, but I'm going to give some KEEN sandals a try this summer, too.  As far as clothing, we have a hodgepodge of unique brands that we find at second hand shops like junebug."

That brings me to my next question.  What are your reasons for shopping second hand?

Hands down it is the best choice environmentally.  Sure you can get cheap stuff at Target and places like that, but you pretty much end up with sparkly, glittery stuff which is not our style.  At a second-hand shop, you get more variety, more unique pieces and sometimes find real treasures.

We will miss your frequent and genuine visits to junebug, but wish you all the best in your move to the mountains.  Thank you, Shaina!
